Lawmakers encouragd to fund industry
JOHANNESBURG -- The National Film and Video Foundation is bringing the best local product to lawmakers during a Parliamentary Festival of South African film to encourage them to fund the industry. It's the second such event organized by the NFVF and the Parliamentary Millennium Program. Fest will showcase 13 features, seven documentaries and four shorts between Nov. 5 and 9, aimed at exposing the depth of talent.
Titles range from Gavin Hood's foreign film Oscar-winner "Tsotsi" to the as-yet unreleased features of young directors like Tristan Holmes, who won the 2006 Student Academy Awards' foreign film laurel with "Elalini."
Zubeida Shaik, manager of the Parliamentary Millennium Program, said besides showing MPs what South African filmmakers were doing, the fest would provide a platform for engagement between lawmakers about broader issues in the industry.
