Silverchair rocks Arias

Band sweeps Australian music awards

Rockers Silverchair cleaned up at the Australian Recording Industry Awards, or Arias, in Sydney on Sunday night.

The band, led by Daniel Johns, took home five laurels, including best group, single and the night's top honor, album of the year, for "Young Modern," its first release in five years. The group has now won more Arias than any other band.

Also at the kudofest, broadcast by Network Ten, Missy Higgins drew the female artist nod and dance act Gotye took male performer. Blighty-based Nick Cave was inducted into the Aria Hall of Fame.

International band to watch Operator Please took the award for single from a breakthrough artist for "Just a Song About Ping-Pong," which has seen boffo airplay in Blighty as well as locally.

The children's and country categories went to past winners the Wiggles and Keith Urban, respectively.
