CJ appoints Shin as business head

Korean studio finds new exec VP

South Korea's largest studio, CJ Entertainment, has appointed David Shin as exec VP and head of international business.

Shin, a graduate of the USC Film School, most recently worked in Singapore as a senior veep at ESPN Star Sports.

He replaces former exec VP Mark Yoon, who left CJ in December for a finance-related job in Connecticut.

Shin will oversee international distribution and co-productions as well as pursue partnerships with overseas firms.

CJ has been targeting the U.S. market of late, taking steps toward direct distribution and production through its L.A. office. It also distributes product from Paramount and DreamWorks in South Korea.

The appointment comes after a rough month for CJ's local distrib outfit. Highly anticipated Park Chan-wook pic "I'm a Cyborg, but That's OK" proved less audience-friendly than anticipated, petering out after grossing $5.5 million in two weeks.

Meanwhile, effects-heavy fantasy pic "The Restless" fell considerably short of the studio's high expectations, opening at No. 3 and taking $9.7 million in 10 days.
