Distributor, exhibitor Engel dies

Former critic set up arthouse label Artificial Eye

LONDON — Andi Engel, the German-born founder of U.K. arthouse distrib and exhibitor Artificial Eye, died Dec. 26 in Lubeck, Germany.

A former art critic, Engel and his wife Pamela started Artificial Eye in 1976 to distribute foreign-language movies. He directed his only movie, "Melancholia," in 1989.

In recent years, he stepped back from the day-to-day management of the company, which was sold last year to Act Entertainment and Knatchbull Communications.
