Sony picks up 'Marie'

TORONTO -- Sony Pictures Classics has acquired domestic distribution rights to the French-language film "Marie Baie des Anges," according to sources at the Toronto Intl. Film Festival.

"Marie," which was an official selection at the Venice Film Festival, is also unspooling in Toronto.

The feature film debut of 29-year-old Manuel Pradal, "Marie" is a low-budget film that took five years to make. Set against the backdrop of the French Riviera, pic follows the lives of street adolescents in the tradition of the American indie "Kids."

Vahina Giocante and Frederic Malgras star as young lovers who find temporary escape in each other's arms.

"Marie" was written by Pradal. It was produced by Philippe Rousselet and executive produced by Pascal Judelewicz.

The SPC team of Michael Barker, Tom Bernard and Marcie Bloom are known for their expertise in marketing and distributing foreign-language pics and documentaries. The trio recently scored at the box office with French director Cedric Klapisch's "When the Cat's Away."
