SHOWEST: PREVIEW

Summer forecast: super crowded
Theater owners and Hollywood will have plenty to toast when rendezvousing this week in Las Vegas for exhib confab ShoWest: The 2007 domestic box office was the best on record, digital 3-D is beginning to take on dimension and moviegoers didn't revolt over higher ticket prices.

SHOWEST: DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR

Nolan brings indie sensibility to 'Knight'
In "Memento," British-born director Christopher Nolan's mesmerizing 2001 thriller, the story famously unfolds in reverse chronological order. Now Nolan -- who receives ShoWest's Dirctor of the Year kudo on Thursday -- has turned the clock back again, this time on the "Batman" franchise.
• Nolan's box office numbers
• Animation films call for promo redraw

SHOWEST: PRODUCER OF THE YEAR

SHOWEST: TALENT

Unknown films aim for summer success
By now, it seems likely the 2008 versions of Hollywood's megatentpole franchises -- James Bond, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Batman, the Incredible Hulk and "The Chronicles of Narnia" -- will succeed at the box office.
Half a dozen other 2008 pics look good -- "Speed Racer" and "Iron Man" should have enough fan recognition to succeed, particularly since both are being slotted in prime openings in early May...
