OLD SCHOOL: HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS MORE LIKE SENIOR CITIZENS

Throughout TV history, actors
over drinking age have been
trapped playing high school
students, and the stars of “One
Tree Hill” weren’t exactly exceptions.
Hilarie Burton, Sophia Bush,
Bethany Joy Galeotti and Chad Michael
Murray were in their 20s when they
began their schoolkid roles, and James
Lafferty was a not-exactly tender 18.
Here’s a retrospective look at decades of
TV’s onscreen classrooms, where in
many cases the seniors seemed more
like senior citizens.
(Premiere: Jan. 15, 1974)
At age 24, Anson Williams (Potsie) didn’t need to be told about the 1950s — he lived ’em. But all in all, the gang at Arnold’s wasn’t too over-the-hill: Donny Most (Ralph) was 20, while Ron Howard (Richie) was a tender 19. (Henry Winkler was 28, but the Fonz was in a class by himself.)
(Premiere: Oct. 4, 1990)
No, “90210” wasn’t the combined age of the cast. The belle of the aging high schooler ball premiered with Gabrielle Carteris three months shy of her 30th birthday and more than a decade older than Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling or Brian Austin Green. But 25-year-old Luke Perry and 26-year-old Ian Ziering gave Carteris a little generational company.
(Premiere: Aug. 25, 1994)
The beloved ABC cult favorite cast Claire Danes when she was 13; the actress was 15 when the show premiered. Jared Leto, who played her sullen big crush, Jordan Catellano, was seven years older.
(Premiere: March 10, 1997)
At 19, series star Sarah Michelle Gellar was significantly younger than Sunnydale High classmates Alyson Hannigan (22), Nicholas Brendon (25) and Charisma Carpenter (26)., not to mention vampire Angel (270 ).
(Premiere: Sept. 25, 1999)
Linda Cardellini, convincing (not to mention endearing) as alienated 11th grader Lindsay, was two years ahead of her TV brother Sam in school, but 10 years older than the actor who played him, John Francis Daley. Future “Knocked Up” star Seth Rogen was only 17 when the show premiered but might have looked the oldest of the bunch.
(Premiere: Aug. 5, 2003)
Nearly 25, Benjamin McKenzie seemed a bit grizzled from the get-go — but Mischa Barton (17) and Rachel Bilson (21) were farther apart in age than some realized.
(Premiere: Oct. 3, 2006)
Was baby-faced Zach Gilford (Matt Saracen) really 24 when the show premiered? All ages are relative in this lauded series — Scott Porter (Jason Street) was 27 for the first episode, Minka Kelly (Lyla Garrity) 26 and Taylor Kitsch (Tim Riggins) 25. There’s a gap of about five years between Jesse Plemons (Landry), Aimee Teegarden (Julie) and the rest of the featured schoolkids.
(Premiere: Sept. 19, 2007)
From “Dobie Gillis” to “Gossip Girl,” the more things change, the more they stay the same. High schoolers looking for love are played by people whose high school years are an old memory. With the exception of 14-year-old Taylor Momsen (freshman Jenny Humphrey), the “Gossip” crew is entirely made up of twentysomethings. But it’s a tight group: Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick were born within 25 months of each other.
The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis
(Premiere: Sept. 29, 1959)
As far back as the 1950s, TV stretched the age boundary when it came to casting high schoolers. “Dobie” lead Dwayne Hickman was 25 when the show premiered, while Bob Denver (Maynard G. Krebs) was 24.
Happy Days
(Premiere: Jan. 15, 1974)
At age 24, Anson Williams (Potsie) didn’t need to be told about the 1950s — he lived ’em. But all in all, the gang at Arnold’s wasn’t too over-the-hill: Donny Most (Ralph) was 20, while Ron Howard (Richie) was a tender 19. (Henry Winkler was 28, but the Fonz was in a class by himself.)
Welcome Back, Kotter
(Premiere: Sept. 9, 1975)
Little ol’ Ron Palillo (Arnold Horshack) was 26 when the show premiered — just four years younger than teacher Gabe Kaplan. At 21, John Travolta was the youngest of the Sweathogs.
What’s Happening!!
(Premiere: Aug. 5, 1976)
Nearly 10 years separated 26-year-old Ernest Thomas (Raj) and 25-year-old Fred Berry (Rerun) from Haywood Nelson (Dwayne), who was 16.
The White Shadow
(Premiere: Nov. 27, 1978)
With players as old as 28 (Nathan Cook as Reese), the Carver High basketball team should have had some eligibility issues
The Facts of Life
(Premiere: Aug. 24, 1979)
They took the good, they took the bad, but most of all, they took the young. Bucking the usual trend, 16-year-old Lisa Whelchel (Blair) was the oldest Eastland prepster, and Kim Fields (Tootie) clocked in at a toddleresque 10.
Head of the Class
(Premiere: Sept. 17, 1986)
Ages of the cast portraying this group of gifted children ranged from 11 (Tannis Vallely, in the role of Janice) to 27 (Dan Frischman, who played Arvid). Robin Givens (Darlene) was 21, while future 'Hill' exec producer Brian Robbins (Eric) was 22.

Clueless
(Premiere: Sept. 20, 1996)
For Stacey Dash, the show could have been called “Ageless.” The youthful actress, 28 when the film “Clueless” came out, pushed the envelope all the way past 30 when the TV version debuted — and still sold the role, even though she had played a high schooler on a “Cosby Show” guest spot way back in 1985. Dash had 10 years on series star Rachel Blanchard.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
(Premiere: March 10, 1997)
