Berlinale unveils 60th anni retro pics

David Thomson selects films for section

The Berlin Film Festival, which celebrates its 60th anniversary in February, will shine a spotlight on some of its most memorable and pioneering films in a 40-pic retrospective under the heading Play It Again!

Fest, which runs Feb. 11-21, announced Wednesday some of the entries in the retro.

"A festival like the Berlinale demonstrates how the controversial films of yesterday have become the classics of today," said British film critic David Thomson, who selected the pics.

One milestone came in 1960 with the convention-defying "A bout de souffle" (Breathless), a breakthrough for Jean-Luc Godard at the start of the French New Wave. Other pics will reflect the festival's early years when the Cold War was at its height, the Berlinale's subsequent opening to films from Communist countries and the end of Europe's divisions with the fall of the Berlin Wall.

"We wanted an outside perspective -- which films represent festival history for connoisseur of film David Thomson?," said Berlinale topper Dieter Kosslick. "Which films does he see as having been formative? His selection offers a fascinating glimpse into film history."

The complete program will be announced in mid-January.
