Magnolia nabs 'Humboldt County'

Film to be released domestically in September

'Humboldt County'
'Humboldt County,' about a med student stranded after a one-night stand, will get a domestic release in September.
Magnolia Pictures has picked up domestic rights to "Humboldt County," co-written and co-helmed by tyros Darren Grodsky and Danny Jacobs. Pic preemed at this year's SXSW.

Comedic drama follows a tense med student who has a one-night stand with a free-spirited woman and ends up stranded among a community of California pot growers.

Cast includes Jeremy Strong, Fairuza Balk, Peter Bogdanovich, Frances Conroy, Brad Dourif and Chris Messina. Jason Weiss produced.

"It's a comedic, out-of-the-box drama that we think will speak to a large, underserved segment of the audience," Magnolia prexy Eammon Bowles said.

Magnolia plans to air "Humboldt" via sibling HDNet's Ultra VOD program, followed by a September theatrical rollout beginning in Austin, Texas, and Arcata and Eureka, Calif.
