IFC Films picks up 'Gomorrah'

Mob drama won Grand Prix at Cannes

IFC Films has nabbed domestic rights to Matteo Garrone's mob drama "Gomorrah," winner of the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival.

Based on Robert Saviano's international bestseller, pic tracks five stories in Naples.

"Matteo Garrone has reinvented the Italian Mafia picture with such originality and invention that it seems entirely new," said IFC Entertainment prexy Jonathan Sehring.

IFC Films will release "Gomorrah" theatrically and via its day-and-date distribution platform that allows audiences to see films in theaters and on-demand simultaneously. Pic will also be in Blockbuster stores. The film has grossed almost $8 million since its release in Italy 10 days ago, IFC said.

Pic was produced by Domenico Procacci ("The Last Kiss"). Fandango Portobello Sales, which has sold the film in 25 countries, handled the sale to IFC.

IFC's take from Cannes this year was a little bit lighter than last year, when it picked up 10 films, including Catherine Breillat's upcoming release "The Last Mistress."
