'Persepolis' wins London prize

Pic takes debut feature award

LONDON — “Persepolis,” an animated pic based on co-director Marjane Satrapi’s autobiographical graphic novel about her experiences growing up in Iran during the 1979 revolution, has been awarded the BFI Sutherland Trophy at The Times BFI London Film Festival.

Debut feature prize was handed out during the closing night ceremony on Thursday. “’Persepolis’ is one of the best and most distinctive animated films for grown-ups to appear in recent years,” said fest artistic director Sandra Hebron.

It’s been a banner year for Satrapi and her co-director Vincent Parronaud. Pic won the jury prize at Cannes this year and went on to garner more than a million admissions at the French box office. Pic has also been chosen as France’s representative for the foreign language Academy Award.

Optimum Releasing will release the pic in the U.K. next April.
