First Run picks up 'Crude'
Film unit acquires Sundance documentary

"Crude," a standout Sundance doc about a legal battle between oil giant Chevron and rainforest dwellers in Ecuador, has been acquired by First Run Features.

The distrib has North American theatrical, homevid and Web rights. It plans a theatrical bow at Gotham's IFC Center on Sept. 9, followed by L.A. on Sept. 18 and SanFran on Sept. 25.

Joe Berlinger, known for docs such as "Paradise Lost" and the Metallica doc, directed "Crude." It drew critical praise in Sundance and its environmental message was embraced by a range of notables, from CNN's Christiane Amanpour to Sting and wife Trudie Styler.

Sundance Channel has domestic broadcast rights. Horizon is selling it in foreign territories.

Netflix and Radical Media produced the pic, along with Berlinger and Entendre Films.
