Sony signs up for 'Lessons'
Studio rides with 'Driving' pic

Sony Pictures Classics has picked up North American rights to "Driving Lessons," the pic that marks the directing debut of "Mrs. Brown"-scribe Jeremy Brock.

Pic made its world preem at the Tribeca film fest in Gotham, and is screening here.

Brock's semi-autobiographical British comedy-drama toplines Julie Walters, Rupert Grint and Laura Linney. Pic follows a struggling young poet who accepts a summer job with a former star of stage and screen, Dame Eve Walton. She whisks the boy off on a misbegotten road trip from London to Scotland.

Sony Classics toppers Michael Barker and Tom Bernard -- and their acquisitions and productions head Dylan Leiner -- said that they were huge fans of Brock's "Brown" script.

ContentFilm Intl. reps overseas rights on the pic, which was financed by the U.K. Film Council's Premiere Fund.

Pic is the first project for "Quills" producer Julia Chasman's RubberTreePlant banner. Edward R. Pressman and Alessandro Camon exec produced. Alexandra Ferguson co-produced.

No Stateside release date has been pegged.
