Johansson stars in Levinson pic 'Brilliant'

CANNES -- Scarlett Johansson will topline helmer Barry Levinson's heist pic "Brilliant," the production banners Millennium Films and Emmett/Furla Films announced Thursday.

Pic, which will head into production in September, follows Johansson as a jewel thief who teams up with a conman to pull off the biggest heist in history. However, the duo's relationship is fraught with twists and turns.

Gillian Gorfil and Elizabeth Shorten penned the screenplay, based on a story by Gorfil and Nicholas Lorentz.

Pic is being produced by Avi Lerner, Randall Emmett, Melanie Johansson and Gorfil.

Boaz Davidson, George Furla, Danny Dimbort and John Thompson will exec produce.

Casting is underway to find a male lead.

Johansson is currently lensing "The Nanny Diaries" for the Weinstein Co.

Lerner expects the pic to be a wide release in September 2007.

Millennium is beginning pre-sales on the pic in Cannes.

Company's slate with Emmett/Furla also includes the Michael Douglas-starrer "King of California," Irwin Winkler's "Home of the Brave" and Neil LaBute's "The Wickerman."
