Buyers crow about 'Cockatoo'
Graf's fun-loving dance club pic heads to foreign territories

A love story set in a surprisingly vibrant Communist East Germany in the months leading up to the construction of the Berlin Wall has been snapped up by buyers in Singapore, Brazil and the Benelux.

"The Red Cockatoo" is a Panorama entry about a fun-loving dance club in Dresden called Der Rote Kakadu and was directed by helmer Dominik Graf.

Pic turned upside down the notion that the defunct Communist state was nothing but a dreary place. Instead, pic adopts an upbeat tone and humor similar to the 2003 German hit "Good Bye, Lenin."

"The Red Cackatoo" was released nationwide in Germany on Thursday. Cathay in Singapore, Lumiere in Benelux, and Art Films in Brazil have acquired it. Seller Bavaria also reports strong interest from other buyers, including the Czech Republic.
