Telefilm tuning up '27' doc
Musical greats pic receives funding



TORONTO -- A documentary about the musical genius and lost potential of Jimi Hendrix, Janice Joplin and Jim Morrisson has been tapped as the first to receive funding from a new feature-length theatrical documentary pilot program.

Produced by Brad Fox and Sandra Cunningham ("Where the Truth Lies," "Being Julia",) pic is titled "27" because all three died by the age of 27 between 1970 and 1971. The tale will be told trough a mix of original interviews and filled with music from that era. The film will receive C$625,000 ($539,000) to move into production.

The program is funded and run by Telefilm Canada in partnership with CBC TV and the Rogers Group of Funds. Following its theatrical release, "27" will premiere on the small screen on CBC.

The English-Language Feature Length Theatrical Documentary Program is now open to receive applications for a second round. Submission deadline is May 15, 2005. For more information go to www.telefilm.gc.ca/theatrical-documentary.
