ASCAP TV and Film Scoring Workshop
DAILY UPDATES:
ASCAP Workshop, Day 14
When writing for film, ASCAP Workshop director Richard Bellis told the 12 participants to remember, "It's not a musically sophisticated audience; it's a movie-going audience." On the last day of the workshop, we were that audience as the composers saw how their orchestral scores worked to picture in a DGA screening room.
ASCAP Workshop, Day 13
All kidding aside, Zimmer and his partner on "The Dark Knight," James Newton Howard, hosted the ASCAP composers at a summit in which they discussed the process of remote collaboration.
ASCAP Workshop, Day 12
While the ASCAP workshop has touched on all components of a successful film composer's career, Tuesday's session was their first to meet a director. Tom Shadyac may not be god, but he's created successful movie versions with "Bruce Almighty" and "Evan Almighty."
ASCAP Workshop, Day 11
Although the ASCAP workshop hinges on film composition, TV and video game music may offer even greater opportunities. Said Gerard Marino ("Gods of War"), "I signed a boob after a [gaming music] concert. Despite all the rock bands [I was in], I had to lose half my hair and go to college to sign a boob."
ASCAP Workshop, Day 10
The ASCAP Workshop process began months ago, when more than 300 applicants submitted their scores. Today, it was down to the dozen who would face a 60-piece orchestra on Fox Studios' Newman scoring stage.
