TCM to host classic pic film festival
Fest will screen over 50 vintage films

Turner Classic Movies is getting into the festival business. The Turner cabler will host the TCM Classic Film Festival in Los Angeles April 22-25 in partnership with Vanity Fair.

The fest will include more than 50 screenings of vintage and classic pics, complete with celeb guests and Q&As. TCM has hired Telluride film fest founders Bill and Stella Pence to serve as consultants.

“There are a great many film festivals around the world, but only TCM is so perfectly poised to do something truly original when it comes to classic movies,” Stella Pence said.

TCM’s chief host, Robert Osborne, will serve as emcee of the weeklong event. Screenings will be held in venues with deep Hollywood roots, including Grauman’s Chinese Theater and the Egyptian Theater. The Hollywood Roosevelt will be the fest’s official hotel and a key venue for events.

Film preservation org the Film Foundation will be honored by the fest on the occasion of its 20th anniversary, and the lineup will showcase many of the titles that the org has saved from extinction.

TCM’s move into cinephile fest territory comes on the heels of the inaugural Grand Lyon Film Festival, held last month over six days in Lyon, France. That event, spearheaded by Cannes Film Festival boss Thierry Fremaux, celebrated classic and rare pics in the hometown of cinema pioneers Auguste and Louis Lumiere (Daily Variety, Oct. 19).
