Thomas J. McLean worked in Variety's special reports department from 1999 to 2005, first as production editor and then as associate editor. He co-founded and continues to write Variety's blog Bags and Boards about the comic book biz.

Born in Canada, he is a graduate of the University of Arizona journalism department and previously worked as an editor of various types for daily newspapers in Flagstaff, Ariz.; Boise, Idaho; and Torrance, Calif. Tom is a longtime fan of sci-fi movies and TV, the Edmonton Oilers hockey team, beer, and comic books, of which he has a large collection hiding in his garage. He lives in the Eagle Rock section of Los Angeles with his wife, Jessica; two dogs; a turtle; and a very large goldfish.
