He will be presented with his award at the 61st annual Writers Guild Awards ceremony Feb. 7 at Gotham’s Hudson Theater. Shanley penned the stage play “Doubt,” which opened Off Broadway in 2004 and moved to Broadway in 2005. The screen adaptation, which he wrote and directed, has been nominated for an Oscar and a WGA award.
Shanley won an Oscar and a WGA award for his original screenplay for “Moonstruck.” Other feature credits include “Five Corners,” “The January Man,” “Alive” and “Joe Versus the Volcano,” the last of which he also directed.
“The choice of John Patrick Shanley to receive the Hunter Award honors a scenarist and playwright whose artistry and craftsmanship have created a standard of excellence to which all members of the Writers Guild of America East can aspire,” said WGA East president Michael Winship.
