'Wonderettes' to close
Off Broadway show ends in January

Off Broadway tuner "The Marvelous Wonderettes" will shutter in January after about 16 months on the boards -- a lifespan that qualifies the show as a longrunner on the commercial Off Broadway scene.

Written and directed by Roger Bean, the production incorporates familiar oldies including "It's My Party" and "Lollipop" into a story about a girl group performing at a high school prom in 1958.

Musical followed up a successful L.A. bow with the incarnation at Gotham's Westside Theater, where perfs began in August 2008. Property has proven a popular one among regional theaters, with recent stagings in Chicago and Miami soon to be joined by outings in Detroit, Cincinnati and Long Beach, Calif., among other cities.

David Elzer ("Jewtopia"), Peter Schneider ("Sister Act: The Musical") and Marvelous NYC produce the show, which will play its final Off Broadway perf Jan. 3.
