Oldenburg honors tough guys
Retrospectives lined up for Keach, Ferrara

BERLIN — The upcoming Oldenburg Film Festival is celebrating the tough guy with a tribute to Stacy Keach and a retrospective showcasing the work of Abel Ferrara.

In keeping with that vibe, this year's fest, which runs Sept. 12-16, will again partner with local correctional facility JVA Oldenburg to unspool selected fest titles for inmates.

Keach will also be on hand to head the fest's international jury, which awards the German Independent Award for best German film.

The fest described Keach as "a charismatic all-round talent who celebrates his everlasting success as an artist in a variety of categories," including his work in films and TV series such as John Huston's "Fat City," Walter Hill's "Long Riders," "Mike Hammer" and, more recently, on the hit Fox show "Prison Break."

"As an actor he appeared in masterpieces, worked with some of the most renowned directors and always characterized his roles with a burning energy that has been seminal to newer generations of actors," fest organizers said.

As part of the tribute the fest will unspool a number of Keach films, including "Fat City," "The Ninth Configuration," "The Long Riders" and "American History X."

Among the films screening in the Ferrara retrospective are "Bad Lieutenant," "King of New York," "Mary," "Dangerous Game," "The Blackout," "Ms. 45" and "Go Go Tales."

"In all of his works, Ferrara forces his audience to face the chaos of human existence," the fest said. "The viewer who accepts the fragmentation, disorder and seediness of his stories will ultimately discover a pattern and with it an elementary understanding and awareness."

The fest's lineup includes Maggie Peren's German comedy "Stellungswechsel," which opens the event, Volker Schloendorff's "Ulzhan," Michael Polish's "The Astronaut Farmer," Mary Stuart Masterson's "The Cake Eaters," Sophie Marceau's "Trivial" ("La Disparue de Deauville"), Stephan Geene's "After Effect," Douglas Buck's "Sisters," Slamdance winner "Tijuana Makes Me Happy" from Dylan Verrechia, and Uwe Boll's "Postal."

Following a successful and one-of-a-kind partnership with JVA Oldenburg, the fest will again offer inmates there the opportunity to watch five selected fest titles that will play at the correctional facility. The prison theater will also offer a limited number of tickets to the public so that both convicts and non-convicts can watch the movies together.
