L.A. fest crows over 'Owl'
'Resolved' gets audience award for docu

Stephane Gauger's "Owl and the Sparrow" took the audience award for narrative feature at the Los Angeles Film Festival.

Nod was announced Sunday at closing-night ceremonies.

Gauger directed and wrote "Owl" and co-produced with Quan Van Nguyen and Doan Nhat Nam. Pic centers on a 10-year-old girl who escapes from her factory job and heads to Saigon, where she gradually assembles a makeshift family.

The aud award for documentary feature went to "Resolved." Greg Whitely wrote, directed and produced this look at racial and class divisions in American education in the context of high school debate competitions.

Audience award for international feature went to "Young @ Heart," an English doc by Stephen Walker about a New England senior citizens chorus.

Narrative short trophy was given to Radu Jude's "The Tube With a Hat" and the documentary short prize went to David Fenster's "Wood." Fredrik Emilson's "Love and War" drew the nod for animated/experimental short film.

Aud nod for short film went to Dee Rees' "Pariah," and Joseph Kahn's "Knights of Cydonia," for the band Muse, won the award for musicvideo.
