Event celebrates West Coast culture
Fest will open Sept. 28 at the Barnsdall Art Park in Hollywood.
Swerve programming will include film screenings of independent feature and short films, musicvideos, live music performances and original art installations organized by Beautiful Losers co-curator Aaron Rose. Throughout the weekend, do-it-yourself workshops will provide hands-on filmmaking, meet-the-artist sessions and CreateAskate, a nonprofit national educational curriculum teaching participants how to make their own skateboards.
Environmentally friendly elements such as Global Inheritance's Energy Factory, which generates power from solar, biodiesel and bike stations, will also be present.
"For more than 30 years, the West Coast creative community has been heavily influenced by the skateboarding and surfing subcultures, which are deeply rooted in self-expression. Now we're seeing those same subcultures influence the global scene," said CJ Olivares, senior VP and assistant general manager of Fuel TV. "Fuel TV created the Swerve Festival to celebrate the contemporary innovators driving this movement and to inspire the next generation of creators."
Besides Barnsdall, fest venues include the Vista Theater and Echoplex. Festival needs film, animation and musicvideo submissions by Aug. 6.
A unit of Fox Cable Networks, Fuel TV covers the lifestyle and culture of skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing, BMX, freestyle motocross and wakeboarding.
