Cartoon partners produce 'Penguin'
Madhouse, Denis Friedman team for Rintaro pic

Japanese cartoon champ Madhouse Entertainment and France's Denis Friedman Prods. have teamed to produce "Yona Yona Penguin," a CGI-animated adventure about three children who travel to a fantasy land.

Pic is directed by Rintaro, the Japanese animation master responsible for "Metropolis" and "Captain Herlock," but is set to be a co-production that draws on creative elements from both France and Japan.

Distribution will be handled by Shochiku in Japan, by Hong Kong's Golden Network in other parts of Asia and France's Wild Bunch in other international territories. North American rights will be repped jointly by Madhouse's U.S. division and Shochiku.

Pic is being produced on a below-the-line budget of $12 million, excluding voice casts. It will be presented in three original versions: Japanese, French and English.

To produce the beginning and end sections of the movie, Madhouse has established a combined project team with Japanese sister company Dynamo Pictures. DFP will animate the middle section, while France's Mikros Image will handle post-production.
