Gil to direct adaptation of Rulfo novel

"Paramo" already packs a powerful punch for the Spanish-speaking world. Helmer is Alejandro Amenabar co-scribe Mateo Gil, who directed the Paz Vega thriller "Nobody Knows Anything."
"Paramo" is being produced by Spain's Sogecine, whose credits include "The Others" and "Sex and Lucia." On "Paramo" Sogecine teams with Madrid-based Ariete-Ariane and Portugal's Take 2000.
Mexican Eugenio Caballero, who won an Academy Award this year for "Pan's Labyrinth," has been tapped as art director.
Bernal would play the eponymous Pedro Paramo, a brutal, murderous village cacique.
A "Paramo" gig would add to a busy agenda. Like Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron, Garcia Bernal has broadened his brief from his core profession to become a film industry activist.
Bernal exec produced the Tribeca-screened docuportrait "Chavez" for his Canana production label partner and fellow actor Diego Luna. Canana itself moved into theatrical distribution last month, putting out "El Violin." Garcia Bernal presents his first film as a director, "Deficit," in Cannes Critics Week.
