Katz's 'Quiet City' gets a DVD release, with some reflexive humor to boot
When I was in Brooklyn two weeks ago, Aaron Katz handed off a shiny copy of his touching effort, "Quiet City," (new to DVD this month). It totally holds up on multiple viewings (something, I have to admit, kinda worried me). The film was nominated for the John Cassavettes Award at the upcoming Independent Spirit Awards.
I haven't had a chance to look trhough the special features yet, but it seems "Hannah Takes the Stairs" helmer Joe Swanberg (who finds himself part and parcel of the "mumblecore" movement with Katz and company) has produced a send-up of the style for knee-slapping delight. It's good to see stuff like this since, clearly, "mumblecore" is something that could be far too easily given to self-importance.
