Drama at the DGAs -- Sean Young gets the boot?
I got this note about last night's DGA awards this morning, and had to read it twice. Apparently, things got a bit feisty. Well, just take a look for yourself:Being in the room was an odd experience to say the least. I'm sure you have heard by now the drama of the show....(Tony Gilroy item/subjective reaction to a speech stricken from the record due to ruffled feathers.)
An extremely drunk Sean Young heckled Julian Schnabel the moment he walked on stage to accept his medallion. She was quickly 86'd by security and tried to throw a punch at those ejecting her from the venue. She really ruined Julian's moment and it was kind of sad. He looked into the audience and said "Who said that?" She blurted out something else unintelligible and then he said "Perhaps you'd like to finish my speech," said "thank you very much" and started to step away from the podium. He came back, of course, but it seemed he was visibly pissed and upset by the interruption. Sort of sad, actually. It's like you get this big moment where you're one of the 5 directors honored in a year and then some drunk ass wipe in the audience ruins a lifetime moment for you.
If you're looking for more coverage of last night's festivities, Tom O'Neil has a podcast up of the Coens' acceptance speech as well as some speculation on the DGA-Oscar win percentage. Is "No Country for Old Men" going to take this year's Best Picture award?
Also, as always, Variety has its coverage of the goings-on.
Red Carpet District is Variety contributor Kristopher Tapley's attempt at making sense of the ever-expanding glut of film awards coverage. He's been on the beat for six years. Email

Thanks for support how I can thank you?

On mine the theme is rather interesting. I suggest you it to discuss here or in PM.

I don''t grasp what''s so wrong about saying "get on with it" to someone who clearly needs to get on with it… That said, Sean Young has always been kind of a spoiled brat. At best she’s a very mediocre actress and I wouldn’t want to listen to her drunken babble if you’d pay me. Still, she did nothing unsuitable and if she likes to get drunk and make a fool of herself at these celebrity parties, that’s what she should be allowed to do, in my opinion. Her entering rehab the day after her so-called outburst, is somewhat of an exaggerated reaction, if you ask me.

I worked with Sean early in her career. She is a fine actor, but like many in our business she has a problem that is controlling her. I am glad she is in rehab, I have only the best wishes that she get her life back on-track. Once she does that I'm am positive that she will contribute to the industry as she once did.

I mispelled 'beautiful'.
So, throw me out the same side door as Sean Young. (Please!)

At least she livened things up. So what she drank a bit too much? Nobody's perfect, and it doesn't detract at all from her considerable talent.
Could see her playing Catwoman/Selina Kyle if Frank Miller ever directed "The Dark Knight Returns" (which can't come soon enough after these awful, embarrasing, disapointing "Batman Begins to get yelled at by Bossman Alfred and the entire cast" Nolan films).
Meanwhile maybe there's something for her in the next "Sin City" or in "The Spirit". She's got that film-noir/Blade Runner vibe; acting chops, nice looks (and lips!) and a great sense of humour. She sees the absurdity of Hollywood and isn't afraid to call out against it. We need more 'beutiful dames' who have the guts to stand up to authority, and have fun while doing it. Bravo.

In response to Shawn Kraus: Are you referring to Roman Polanski? Because what you've said about Sydney Pollack - very unclear. And uncool.

Sean, please get the help that you so desperately need and STOP this self destructive behavior that is derailing your career and life...prove to the world that you are still the great actress you once were. This is what your diminishing fan base and those of us who have stuck by you through the hard times wish for you.

Good for Sean!

I was there - people laughed at the joke. I don't think it was mean-spirited at all. He was just joking that they would tell GC the speech was all about him. The Sydney P moment didn't feel forced, or like a way to save the speech - it was genuine and heartfelt.

I just ran the remarks. Not my own interpretation. I think Gilroy is one of the cooler cats I've met in this business, so, there we are. At the same time, if he did make a jab at Clooney, I wouldn't be surprised given some of the behind-the-scenes goings-on with that screenplay.

See how people can misconstrue remarks...

The Tony Gilroy item is misleading he said that there were so many producers and people to thank that he was going to thank the people that were there..that's when he joked that everyone could just tell George it was all about him (George is in Darfur for the UN)...the joke got a laugh...because most people know that it's always all about George. His comments about Sydney were very heartfelt, and I think the awkwardness of his speech was because Sydney was supposed to come that night to introduce Tony, but was too gravely ill.

That should be "invoking Sidney Pollack's name, not "evoking"
Posted by: Blah | 1/28/2008 8:21:29 AM
The town and the industry prefers to keep that chatter to a minimum, but yes, they are.
Posted by: Kristopher Tapley | 1/28/2008 1:08:08 AM
So are the rumors about Pollack's ill health true?
Posted by: m | 1/27/2008 11:33:06 PM
Clooney is a man's man. He will forgive all slights.
Posted by: J | 1/27/2008 9:20:21 PM
Gilroy and Clooney have a good relationship; Clooney knows it was just a joke.
