Checking in with the Oscarweb
I'm suffering through Richard Roeper and What's-His-Name's red carpet coverage and thought I'd check in with the Oscarweb to see what's what.
Tom O'Neil is hard at work live blogging everything from timed supporting performances to his bowel movements (kidding), while David Carr is down in the lion's den, chatting it up with the likes of Robert Osborne and Rick Rosas and Brad Oltmanns, the two accounts from PricewaterhouseCoopers, knowers of all things golden.
For the moment, Sasha Stone's Awards Daily website is up and down, but she's got that annual No Guts No Glory predictions contest going strong, as usual. Meanwhile, David Poland never misses an opportunity to smack the media, new OR old, but at least he's offering some space for his readers to comment.
We're about to get started with the introductory podcast with The Movie Blog crew. I'll be joined by John Campea and Doug Nagy from the site, as well as Robert Sanchez, head cheese at IESB.com. I'm kicking it with the net geeks tonight.

Red Carpet District is Variety contributor Kristopher Tapley's attempt at making sense of the ever-expanding glut of film awards coverage. He's been on the beat for six years. Email

The Oscars had low ratings this year not just because the grim movies and writers strike, but because the show was just plain boring. Jon Stewart was so bad. I can think of only 3 funny things he said all evening and they were towards the end while I was almost asleep from excitement. He certainly put people to sleep in his boring monologue and was not entertaining. His comments about Hilary Swank and Dennis Hopper were really inappropriate and so not funny. Several actors flubbed their lines and the music category was to die for, and not in a good way. It was too painful to listen too. Miley Circus should have not been there as this show is not around kids entertainment and her movie, if you call it that, is for kids who were not the audience for this show. All the big deal over aging George Clooney and his girlfriend half his age, come on! He is old enough to be her father! That's what people should have been buzzing about! And the arrogant Coen Brothers. The one brother who could only muster up a thanks! Does he realize that even though he could be bored out of his mind have to begrudgingly stand on stage and accept an Oscar, more than once, there are people all over the world who don't work in the entertainment industry who would be offended by the way the Coen bros acted. Enough with the red carpet commentary with the likes of 80 yr. Regis and awful, stupid comments from Ryan Idiot Seacrest. Way to make an industry look really lame.
