Indie Spirit Noms
The Independent Spirit Award nominees hit this morning. Variety has the story. It seems Todd Haynes' "I'm Not There" walked away with five nominations, a true indie in the spirit of the term. Elsewhere, there was love for "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" and "Juno," of course, each of them racking up four mentions. The whole slate kind of reads like the Fox Searchlight awards, with "Juno," "The Namesake," "The Savages" and "Waitress" popping up all over the place. Not much love for "Once," though. A single nomination in Best Foreign Film.
However, the REAL indie world was represented in the John Cassavettes Award nominees, where Aaron Katz was recognized for his mumblecore standout "Quiet City." In an arena designated for films made under the $500,000 mark, "Quiet City" was put together for a mere $2,000. That's what I'm talking about!
Big congrats to Katz, Brendan McFadden and Ben Stambler.
