TIFF Picks - Grant Gee's "Joy Division"

Grant Gee played a central role in Radiohead's huge album "OK Computer" as director of the fantastically torturous video for "No Surprises" - where Thom York stops singing for 57 seconds as his fishbowl helmet fills with water, then drains (watch it below). Grant also directed one of the most subtle and revealing concert docs, "Meeting People is Easy," as he followed Radiohead on tour, capturing the thrill and angst of the band's exploding notoriety.
At Toronto he brings a new doc, this time looking back at seminal '70s post-punk group, Joy Division. Interestingly, Gee teamed with Tom Atencio, who managed the band that Joy Division would become after frontman Ian Curtis (pictured above) committed suicide - New Order. From the press release:
In 1976 4 young men from ruined, post-industrial Manchester, England went to see the Sex Pistols. They formed a band, Joy Division. Three years later it was a matter of art, life and death.
A biopic on Curtis, Anton Corbijn's "Control" is in the top five of audience favorites at Edinburgh, and will close Swerve Fest. (Mike Jones)
