Sundance profile: Graffiti Research Labs
Following up my earlier post that Sundance needs to wake up its New Frontier section, it's good to see the list, which was finally updated on the Sundance site after the release went out. Along with DJ Spooky's project on the sound of ice, and giant new-media murals by Jennifer Steinkamp and Marina Zurkow, I'm keen to see what the folks at the Graffiti Research Lab will pull off. "Dedicated to outfitting artists with open source technologies for urban communication," GRL's new-tech graffiti art is just the kind of thing that corporations steal for advertising traction. It's speculated that the "mooninite" ad campaign/terrorist scare for the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie was inspired by GRL's "LED throwies" (check out the video here). The silly Sprint ads with the racing lights were done already by GRL. And were much more interesting. GRL's biggest projects use projectors and lasers to tag huge surfaces (pictured above). In the ad-soaked landscape of Park City in January, it'll be interesting to see what they pull off. Here's how they do it:
