A Woody Allen primer

The Onion's AV Club has a primer on Woody Allen. "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" opens today.
Right from the start, Allen established a comedic persona that would more or less stretch through every phase of his career. Yes, he has depths of intellect and melancholy that don't surface [in 1969's "Take the Money and Run"], but other elements are firmly in place: The runaway neuroses, the merciless self-deprecation, the bumbling physical hijinks, the ongoing feelings of romantic and sexual inadequacy.
Check out our Woody Allen lunch from Cannes 2008. Woody didn't touch a thing on his plate:

Michael Jones is the film festival editor at Variety.com.

He's not eating because it seems they have not yet been served anything.
Maybe the food will never come, affirming Woody's conviction that life
is mostly a sick joke.
