Barry Jenkin's pic "Medicine for Melancholy" will be the sole U.S. film competing in the Mar del Plata Film Festival, reports Charles Newbery.   

Why only one North American flavor?

"We want to offer an ice-cream parlor for all tastes, not just vanilla, chocolate and strawberry," said Argentine vet helmer Jose A. Martinez Suarez, who is running the fest.

We like sprinkles.

Charles Newberry writes that Kathryn Bigelow will unspool her "The Hurt Locker" will open the 23rd Mar del Plata Film Festival, running November 6-16 in Argentina.

Scribe Mark Boal will attend with Bigelow. Argentina's Gaston Pauls and Julieta Diaz, thesps of local commercial hits "Nueve reinas" (Nine Queens) and "La senal" (The Signal), respectively, will host the opening night of the country's oldest and Latin America's only FIAPF Category A fest.

Newberry also notes that local helmer Jose A Martinez Suarez will manage this year with Fernando Pena, who ran the Buenos Aires Int'l. Festival of Independent Film (BAFICI) for three years. 

The Circuit will be filing daily reports from Mar del Plata starting November 6.
