Lincoln Center gets new Film Society exec

As New York's Lincoln Center puts the finishing touches on their new film center, the Film Society has announced that Mara Manus is their new exec director.  Manus moves over from The Public Theater where as exec director she oversaw the company's financial stability and growth.

Board prez Daniel Stern said: "She will be a great leader for our organization and will take the Film Society to new heights.  Her expertise in strategic planning and fundraising, as well as her knowledge of the city, will be a great asset to the organization, and will serve us well in reaching our goals and charting a new future that maximizes the expanded capability of a new film center in an extremely complex landscape.”

The Film Society of Lincoln Center puts on The New York Film Festival, New Directors/New Films, publishes Film Comment Magazine, and programs the Walter Reade Theater.

New Directors preview

AO Scott previews New Directors/New Films, where Lance Hammer's "Ballast" is screening, and has a proposal:
For nearly four decades New Directors/New Films has been the straightforward, serviceable name of a generous program presented every spring by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and the Museum of Modern Art. I’m not suggesting that they change or rebrand it, but after watching the first half of this year’s lineup, movies of modest means and evident ambition, I prefer to think of the festival as Serious Directors/Small Films.

New Directors lineup is Sundance heavy

Sundance Grand Jury prize winner "Frozen River" will open the 37th annual New Directors/New Films.  The rural drama directed by Courtney Hunt is just one of several Sundance winning selections this year for the New York fest.  L

Lance Hammer's "Ballast" and Alex Rivera's "Sleep Dealer" are also in the lineup, which won the directing award and the screenwriting awards, respectively.  On the doc end, Tia Lessin and Carl Deal's Katrina doc "Trouble the Water" will also unspool, fresh off its Sundance Grand Jury doc win.  A total of 26 films and 7 shorts from 17 countries will screen.

Presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and The Museum of Modern Art, the fest has become a respected platform for new talent.  It is curated by a combined team from both institutions, including Jytte Jensen, Laurence Kardish, Marian Masone, Joanna Ney, Richard Peña, and Rajendra Roy.

New Directors/New Films runs March 26 – April 6.
