14Smelling Good in the Age of Obama
I’ve gotten to know Sean Combs (also known as P. Diddy) lately and find him a font of good ideas. His newest scheme: A fragrance that strikes me as the ideal Christmas gift for the guy who’s down and discouraged as a result of the economic collapse. The fragrance is called “I Am King” and Combs acknowledges it was inspired by Barack Obama’s stirring victory at the polls. “It’s a new America and it’s our time,” said Combs, and “I Am King” is designed to reflect that upbeat message.
P. Diddy’s innovations are to be taken seriously. He’s into fashion, hip-hop and vodka, and his products generate well over $500 million in annual retail sales. The 39-year old rapper is also a terrific guy who worked hard to elect Obama and believes firmly that the Obama era will bring new confidence to the typical young African-American.
Diddy’s multiplicity of names stems from inner city nicknames, he explains to new friends. Since he himself has had many careers and has worn many faces, he accepts the fact that he also has earned many names, but he’s most comfortable being known as Sean Combs.
I can think of many discouraged guys who could use a quick spritz of “I Am King.” And at $57 a bottle, I may even keep one around for myself.
