17Getting ‘Hooked’ on Lists
As an editor, I’ve been reminded by consultants and other random journalistic gurus that readers like lists. They like lists even more than they like news.
I was intrigued therefore by this week’s revelations about the lists carried by an online publication called TheEroticReview.com. Operated by a brave man named David Elms, this enterprise not only carries lists of prostitutes but also allows visitors to rank their experiences on a scale of 1 to 10 – sort of a combination of Craigslist and Zagats.
Jason Itzler, who has been identified as the former pimp of Eliot Spitzer’s hooker Ashley Dupre, called Elms “the most influential man in the prostitution business in America.” According to the New York Times, Elms is now in jail awaiting trial in Los Angeles in a case unrelated to his web site.
Elms originally said he started his review because he was “tired of being ripped off.” However, Elms is facing many problems. While free speech advocates insist his site is within the law, one attorney is threatening him with an antitrust law suit for banning certain escort agencies from his site.
Elms might choose to stay in the safety of his jail cell.
