23Where is Tom Hanks Now that We Need Him?
The proposed AFTRA settlement has been sent to AFTRA members; meanwhile AFTRA members are getting hammered by the SAG propaganda machine to reject it. At the same time, some top SAG members, like Tom Hanks, are supporting the AFTRA settlement. If the various actors and other random functionaries receiving their ballots feel confusion in the air, they may also be baffled by the wording of the ballot.
An AFTRA member cannot simply vote yes or no on the contract proposal. They must approve or disapprove “the 1908-2011 Exhibit A to the AFTRA Network Television Code” – that’s the precise wording AFTRA members are also assured that the tentative agreement resulted from the deliberations of “working performers in the W&W process.”
It’s not clear what the “W&W” process is, but all of the guilds like to keep things arcane and they usually succeed.
