While the list is heavy with superheroes, the Academy recognized the reverse-aging of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and the digitally altered landscapes of “Australia,” but not “Speed Racer” or “Wanted.”
The 15 films: “Australia,” “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian,” “Cloverfield,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “The Dark Knight,” “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” “Hancock,” “Hellboy II: The Golden Army,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” “Iron Man,” “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,” “Quantum of Solace” and “The Spiderwick Chronicles.”
On Jan. 6 the VFX exec committee will announce seven of the 15 that pics will compete in a bakeoff. The bakeoff is Jan. 15 at the Acad’s Goldwyn Theater, when the branch membership will pick the final three.
Nominations for the 81st Academy Awards will be announced Jan. 22.
