Submitted features are: "Alvin and the Chipmunks," "Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters," "Bee Movie," "Beowulf," "Meet the Robinsons," "Persepolis," "Ratatouille," "Shrek the Third," "The Simpsons Movie," "Surf's Up," "Tekkonkinkreet" and "TMNT."

"Chipmunks," "Beowulf" and "Persepolis" must still complete a portion of AMPAS' qualifying rules to advance in the voting process.

Of the 12, four are cel-animated: "Aqua Teen," "Persepolis," "Simpsons" and "Tekkonkinkreet." That's a big jump from last year, when there were only two cel pics.

"Alvin" is a combo of live-action and CGI animation.

The rest are CGI toons, with the exception of the performance-capture "Beowulf." Before the list was unveiled Thursday, there was some question -- as there had been with "Polar Express" -- whether motion-capture qualifies as animation or live-action.

"Persepolis" and "Tekkonkinkreet" were originally released in majority foreign-language versions (French-English-Persian and Japanese, respectively).

As per current AMPAS rules for the final category, the list of 12 films will be whittled down to a maximum of three.

Noms for the 80th Academy Awards will be announced on Jan. 22 at the Acad's Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
