HOLLYWOOD -- The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has named seven semifinalists for the achievement in makeup Oscar, shortlisting "Apocalypto," "Click," "Pan's Labyrinth," "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," "The Prestige," "The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause" and "X-Men: The Last Stand."

Shortlist will be narrowed down to three nominees at the Jan. 20 bakeoff, where the makeup award nominating committee will screen 10 minutes of excerpts from each film.

Acad just elected its makeup branch in October. The 115 members of the branch (which includes makeup artists and hairdressers) were previously grouped into the org's members-at-large category.

Nominations for the 79th annual Academy Awards will be announced on Jan. 23 at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Oscars will be handed out Feb. 25.
