Bullock to work 'Magic'

NEW YORK --- Sandra Bullock is near a deal to star for director Griffin Dunne in Warner Bros.' "Practical Magic." The film is based on an Alice Hoffman novel adapted by Robin Swicord.

Filming is expected to begin in January.

Akiva Goldsman ("Batman & Robin," "A Time to Kill") has just come aboard for rewrite work.

The film will be produced by Denise DiNovi and her WB-based DiNovi Pictures. Dunne logs his second directing assignment for WB, after making his feature directing debut on the Meg Ryan-Matthew Broderick-starrer "Addicted to Love." DiNovi produced the Swicord-scripted "Little Women" at Columbia.

Pic is described as a dark and comic fable about two sisters who practice magic and find love in contemporary New England.

There is another juicy female lead role, and a source said WB is courting Nicole Kidman. It's unclear whether the actress, who has been filming WB's Stanley Kubrick-directed "Eyes Wide Shut" in London for nearly a year, will take part in "Magic."

Bullock, along with her Fortis Films, has been an active participant in the development of the bestselling novel, and finally is ready to commit to make it her next film.

Coming off the disappointing returns of "Speed 2: Cruise Control," she is entering into a film that is said to have the charm of a "While You Were Sleeping."

Bullock is repped by UTA's Cynthia Shelton-Droke.
