Tommy Benford

Tommy Benford, a drummer for such jazz greats as Fats Waller, Jelly Roll Morton and Sidney Bechet, died March 24.

He was 88.

Benford played on some of Morton's best-known recordings, including "Kansas City Stomp" and "Shreveport."

From 1932-41, he toured Europe, playing and recording with trumpeter Bill Coleman, singer Joe Turner, violinist Eddie South and saxophonist Coleman Hawkins.

He played with Bob Wilber, Snub Mosley, the Harlem Blues and Jazz Band and Bob Greene's World of Jelly Roll Morton.
