Rangers near Fox pic pact

Last Christmas, parents scoured shelves at toy stores around the nation to find the elusive Mighty Morphin Power Rangers action figures. Last week, studio execs were battling just as hard for the rights to make a movie out of Haim Saban's runaway Fox TV hit.

Seven-figure advance

As the dust cleared, sources said Fox was finalizing a deal with a seven-figure advance to bring the show to the big screen. The deal will get the movie to theaters by Easter 1995, through Fox's family film division.

Fox was among eight studios or major producers tossing around million-dollar offers to the negotiating team of attorney Sam Fischer and ICM agents David Greenblatt and Robert Newman. A spokesman for Saban said studios were still bidding and a winner hadn't yet been declared.

Still negotiating

A spokeswoman at Fox also said the deal wasn't finished.

The live-action series features five crime-fighting teenage martial arts experts. When they really into a bind in the battle against Rita Repulsa, the Empress of Evil, the kids morph into a single giant robot, which has yet to be beaten by the forces of evil.
