New Line Cinema, banking on the Jim Carrey vehicle "The Mask" as its hot summer prospect, has moved up the pic's opening by one week to July 29. New Line distrib and marketing prexy Mitchell Goldman said the pic will open earlier to capitalize on summer B.O. potential.

Carrey plays a bank clerk who turns into a superhero when he dons an ancient mask. Cameron Diaz, Richard Jeni, Peter Riegert, Amy Yasbeck and Peter Greene also star in the film directed by Chuck Russell.

King World's firstrun syndie newsmag "American Journal" is a firm go for the 1994-95 season. "Journal," which airs primarily in the prime access daypart of 7 p.m.-8 p.m., is the highest rated new strip of the broadcast season. King World has renewed the show in 70% of the country, including all top 10 markets.

Bob Goen and Arthel Neville will co-host the Miss Universe Pageant, which will air May 20 on CBS.

Virtual World Entertainment, developer of the world's first digital theme park, will open three more Virtual World sites this summer. VWE chairman/CEO Tim Disney said openings are set for Dallas on June 1, Las Vegas on July 1 and Old Town Pasadena on Aug. 1. Each site offers BattleTech and the newest Virtual World adventure, Red Planet.
