'Paper' chases good numbers in bicoastal bow
The following is a list of weekend grosses for films released in New York and Los Angeles.
Los Angeles
"The Paper" (Universal) opened to $ 25,878 at the AMC Century 14 and $ 37,879 at the Cineplex Universal City 18.
"Four Weddings and a Funeral" (Gramercy) jumped 60% to $ 17,449 in its second weekend at the AMC Century 14 but slipped 9% to $ 19,117 in its second at the Criterion 6 and 3% to $ 21,935 in its second at the Beverly Connection 6.
"The Hudsucker Proxy" (Warner Bros.) fell 32% to $ 17,738 in its second at the AMC Century 14 and debuted to $ 11,406 at the Fine Arts.
"Belle Epoque" (Sony Pictures Classics) climbed 9% to $ 13,154 in its third at Laemmle Royal.
"Bitter Moon" (Action) opened to $ 11,029 at the Landmark NuArt.
"Dangerous Game" (MGM) opened to $ 10,583 at the Beverly Center.
"Savage Nights" (Gramercy) dropped 22% to $ 2,013 in its third at the Samuel Goldwyn Pavilion and 30% to $ 6,668 in its third at the Laemmle Sunset 5.
"The Scent of Green Papaya" (First Look) was off 13% to $ 3,555 in its seventh at the Samuel Goldwyn Pavilion, 53% to $ 744 in its second at the Los Feliz, but climbed 14% to $ 2,502 in its seventh at the Laemmle Sunset 5.
"Midnight Cowboy" (MGM/UA), in limited rerelease, opened at the Mann Fourplex to $ 2,564 and the Mann Criterion 6 to $ 1,475.
"La Vie De Boheme" (Kino Intl.) debuted to $ 1,238 at the Laemmle Monica.
"Twogether" (Borde Film Releasing) slipped 28% to $ 1,043 in its second at Laemmle Sunset 5.
New York
"Four Weddings and a Funeral" dropped 32% to $ 30,628 in its second at the Loews New York Twin and 29% to $ 27,769 in its second at the Loews 19th Street East. It opened to $ 28,311 at the Loews Columbus Circle.
"The Paper" debuted to $ 48,469 at the Cineplex Odeon Coronet.
"Sirens" (Miramax) fell 29% to $ 12,893 in its third at the 68th Street Playhouse and 19% to $ 18,541 in its third at the Angelika.
"Belle Epoque" was off 7% to $ 9,886 in its fourth at the Eastside Playhouse and 16% to $ 14,830 in its fourth at the Lincoln Plaza.
"The Hudsucker Proxy" dropped 34% to $ 21,625 in its second at the Loews Tower East.
"Bitter Moon" opened to $ 7,175 at Cinemas 1 Third Avenue, $ 4,044 at the Thalia, and $ 7,658 at the Quad.
"Savage Nights" slipped 23% to $ 15,547 in its fourth at the Angelika.
"Suture" (Samuel Goldwyn) debuted to $ 11,706 at the Angelika.

"Fiorile" (Fine Line) dropped 27% to $ 4,926 in its seventh at the Lincoln Plaza and 19% to $ 2,596 in its seventh at the Village East.
"Naked" (Fine Line) slipped 18% to $ 7,414 in its 14th at the Angelika.
"Midnight Cowboy" fell 31% to $ 6,980 in its fourth at the Cineplex Odeon Baronet.
"Calendar" (Zeitgeist) fell 42% to $ 3,611 in its second at the Quad.
"The Cement Garden" (October) opened at the Angelika 57 to $ 1,233.
