Spielberg recipient of Governor's Arts honor

Director Steven Spielberg will add another feather to his cap, receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at the fifth annual Governor's Arts Awards.

Spielberg joins other awardees in this year's event, which will be held March 25 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Also skedded for honors are Iris and B. Gerald Cantor for their arts patronage; artist David Hockney; actor Hal Holbrook; Mehli Mehta, music director and conductor of the Los Angeles American Youth Symphony (and father of Zubin Mehta); the San Francisco Foundation; novelist Alice Walker ("The Color Purple"); and sculptor Beatrice Woods.

The Governor's Arts Awards benefit the California State Summer School for the Arts, which enables 450 students from ninth to 12th grades to participate in an intensive eight-week summer program. The awards are presented in conjunction with the California Arts Council.
