The state of California continues to dominate the market in terms of the number of feature films that were either partially or completely shot here in 1993.
Recent statistics issued by the California Film Commission show that 434 film starts were recorded in California in '93, compared to 53 in New York, the biggest competitor.
That number was up significantly from 1992, when 319 film starts were recorded in California, vs. 43 in New York.
Not surprisingly, the industry continues to be big business for the state. In March, the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers will release a report on the industry's economic impact in California.
This report marks the first time the industry has ever studied itself and its influence.
Among other states that hosted a lot of film business over the past year were Florida (16 film starts), Texas (14) and Arizona (12).
States that had some motion picture business during the year were Nevada (nine), Illinois (nine), Utah (eight), New Jersey (seven), Georgia (six) and Michigan (six).
In related areas, year-end stats for films shot on California state property showed a slight decrease in the number of permits (down 3.5%), but a 19% increase in the number of actual days of filming.
The California Film Commission also saw more business coming through its doors, with 7,507 projects receiving CFC assistance, vs. 3,689 in 1992.
