Alternative artists fuel soundtrax

On the heels of such soundtrack success as "Singles,""Judgment Night, ""Wayne's World" and "Until the End of the World," it's not surprising that -- like "Reality Bites" -- numerous films are using alternative artists for their own CD collections.

A survey of alternative soundtracks, current and in the near future, includes:

"Airheads" (Arista/Fox Records): Fox's hard-rock collection is by far the heaviest here, with White Zombie (appearing also onscreen), Dig, Prong and a three-way meeting of Motorhead, Sebastian Bach and Ugly Kid Joe. Out June 14.

"Blink" (Milan Entertainment): The current Miramax release features contemporary take on Celtic sounds of the Drovers, an unsigned bar band from Chicago. CD is out now.

"The Chase" (Epitaph Records): Fox film features independent labelmates Bad Religion, Rancid, the Offspring, Down by Law and NOFX, plus the Rollins Band, Suede and the upcoming single from One Dove. CD release: mid-March.

"The Crow" (Atlantic Records): Troubled Brandon Lee starrer features a particularly high-profile disc of big genre names from Nine Inch Nails to the Cure. Tentative release: March 22.

"Flintstones" (MCA Records): Not an alternative mix for the upcoming Universal feature but spotlights a redo of the theme and "The Twitch" by the B- 52's.

"In the Name of the Father" (Island/Polygram Records): In addition to cuts performed by U2's Bono, Gavin Friday and Sinead O'Connor, there are '60s and '70 s favorites. Big push for O'Connor's video clip, directed by the film's helmer, Jim Sheridan. Already out.

"Pulp Fiction" (label undetermined): Quentin Tarantino books a "very eclectic" compilation of such underground heavies as Urge Overkill (doing Neil Diamond's "Girl You'll Be a Woman Soon") and songbird Maria McKee. No release date scheduled.

"Threesome" (Epic Soundtrax): TriStar's April 8 film has a tuneful power-pop disc featuring a new General Public cover of "I'll Take You There." Tentative CD date: March 15.
