'Naked' rebounds from quaky L.A. exclu B.O.

Business in Los Angeles continued to shake off the effects of the earthquake last weekend, as indicated by a general upward trend on the exclusives roster. The Jan. 17 Northridge quake leveled B.O. the previous weekend.

New York saw "Naked" lose only a little steam and First Look's "The Scent of Green Papaya" open to generally good reviews and a healthy B.O.

The following is a list of weekend grosses for films released in New York and Los Angeles.

Los Angeles

"Naked" (Fine Line) jumped 178% to $ 2,636 after resuming a full schedule in its seventh at the Samuel Goldwyn Pavilion; slipped 34% to $ 4,403 in its seventh at the Laemmle Sunset 5.

"The 24th Intl. Tournee of Animation" (Samuel Goldwyn Co.) fell 22% to $ 6, 263 in its second at the Landmark Nuart.

"The Accompanist" (Sony Classics) up 39% to $ 3,125 in its sixth at the Laemmle Music Hall.

"Faraway, So Close" (Sony Classics) jumped 36% to $ 2,267 in its second at the Laemmle Music Hall.

"Sex and Zen" (Rim Film) climbed 29% to $ 571 in its second weekend (Friday and Saturday performances) at the Laemmle Sunset 5.

New York

"Naked" shed 6% to $ 8,971 in its second at the 68th Street Playhouse, 28% to $ 4,990 in its seventh at Thalia; 15% to $ 16,752 in seventh at Angelika.

"The Scent of Green Papaya" (First Look) opened to $ 14,522 at the Lincoln Plaza.

"The 24th Intl. Tournee of Animation" slipped 5% to $ 14,342 in its second at the Angelika.

"The Accompanist" slipped 13% to $ 7,875 in its sixth at the Lincoln Plaza but rose 7% to $ 4,631 in its third at the Quad.

"Faraway, So Close" debuted to $ 1,662 at the Cineplex Odeon Worldwide and slipped 8% to $ 6,884 in its sixth at the Angelika.

"Strictly Ballroom" (Miramax) off 9% to $ 3,686 in its fifth at the Cineplex Odeon Worldwide and did $ 1,707 in its first at the Cineplex Odeon 34th Street East.

"The Trial" (Angelika) dipped 2% to $ 3,404 in its 10th at the Angelika 57.

"Wrestling Ernest Hemingway" (Warner Bros.) was down 20% to $ 1,356 in its fifth at the Cineplex Odeon Plaza.
